...and I have officially retired.
Let's back up to 2010 Pokemon VGC in Indianapolis, IN. For my birthday we took a small vacation to the capital city for my first chance to compete in Pokemon at the competitive level. I had no experience in professional level play and had taken my in-game team with a specially-raised Pokemon that I felt could carry my team.
I was soundly crushed by a SHINY team of Palkia, Kyogre, Latias and Hitmontop IN THE FIRST ROUND. The only thing I knocked out was the Hitmontop with my trained Gyarados. The rest fell like flies.
And so began my studying and understanding of the VGC metagame of IVs, EVs, Natures and typical movesets that complimented the battle style. I had become fairly proficient and had played around with breeding to find that not only was it fairly easy to get the stats you want but to get specific breed-based moves had become easier. I also followed the following years of Pokemon VGC rules and was delighted to find that, while still very legendary-heavy, majority of the top-tier legendary Pokemon were banned from the competition. So I no longer needed to fear Palkias, Kyogres or any of the newly-released legends at the time, Zekrom or Reshiram and their alternate OP forms. So I built and tested a team that could at least hold a few rounds the next time I wanted to compete.
So here we are, Dec. 10th 2015, and the rules for 2016 have been released. And directly from pokemon.com, the following guidelines have been provided:
"Teams may have no more than two of the following Pokémon: Mewtwo, Lugia, Ho-Oh, Kyogre, Groudon, Rayquaza, Dialga, Palkia, Giratina, Reshiram, Zekrom, Kyurem, Xerneas, Yveltal, and Zygarde."
That's right, fellow trainers and breeders alike. Not only do we have legends that used to be outlawed, but now they are allowed to compete IN THEIR MEGA/PRIMAL FORMS. MegaRay will be on nearly every team and MegaGroudon has proven to have very few checks. On top of that I could still face the team that destroyed me 6 years ago, only improved.
So I now retire my team of Togekiss, Lapras, Luxray, Volcarona, Ferrothorn, and Tyranitar-M. The dream of going to the competitive level with a team WITHOUT legends will stay a dream and nightmares of Palkia, Primal Kyogre and Mega Latias will continue to haunt me.
Good luck to any other trainers that attempt to take on the mess that 2016 has created.
